Ultimate Online Sudoku Combat

October 29th, 2006

You might think that you’re the ace at sudoku, now that you can complete all the daily sudoku puzzles in the news. But just wait until you compete with others online on this logic game that swept the globe away.

Introducing to you here today is what I would describe as the ultimate online sudoku platform. While the Online Sudoku Championship 2006 offers traditional single player puzzles, what makes it shines is its multiplayer feature. In a multiplayer game of 2-4 players, all of the players will be shown the exact same grid, and whenever a square is filled in correctly by any player, it will be revealed to all other players as well. The objective of the game is then to compete with your opponents to try to fill up as many unfilled squares as possible before your opponent does, but beware, marks will be removed for wrong numbers as well! So by taking sudoku the next level, you are no longer just challenging yourself to completing the puzzle, you are seeing how fast your brain functions compared with other sudoku solvers like you.

If you’ve never solved a sudoku puzzle before in your life, check out this website to learn how it’s done. Even if you have math-phobia, do not worry since sudoku has absolutely no maths involved at all, even though you might panic with all the numbers.

How high school chemistry should have been

October 29th, 2006

I was never too fond of my chemistry classes during high school. One of the reasons was because of my disappointment when I realized that chemistry wasn’t all about making bubbly fluorescent concoctions or blowing up chemicals as shown on the TV. All the hands on experiments that we had seemed too ’safe’ to be interesting. This great chemistry class in UK though, proved me wrong and demonstrated how classroom chemistry can also be interesting and dangerous - as long as enough safety precautions were taken to ensure the experiment was under control.

The chemistry teacher tried to illustrate the difference between heating up liquid and powdered milk. Applying a flame to liquid milk didn’t do anything much to it except turn it into a warm beverage, however with just a small spark on the powdered milk, it instantly combusted into fumes. The dynamic ignition of the milk experiment surely would have left a strong blast in the students mind on the impacts of a large surface area for chemical reactions.

March of the Zombies

October 28th, 2006

Halloween is still a few days away, but there has already been some stirring of underworld activity here in Toronto. Last Sunday was the annual Toronto Zombie Walk , in which hundreds to thousands of people …. er zombies got their early chance to roam downtown Toronto showing off their coolest costumes and makeup. Entering their fourth year, the zombie march has become a huge success, just look at those ghoulish grins on all of them and you will know what I mean.

Check out the zombie cop! He must have just moved here from Raccoon City.
The dead roam amongst us. The zombie cop looks as if he just moved here from Raccoon City.

Zombie Punks
A mob of undead punks.

Zombie Rampage
Zombies on rampage. It must have been quite a scene from the inside.

They've even invaded Kensington
They’ve even invaded Kensington Market!

Corpse Bride
Till death do we part…

Where's Waldo?
Seems like Waldo’s here to join the party as well.

IE7 vs Firefox2

October 26th, 2006

IE7 vs Firefox 2.0
Just slightly more than a week after Microsofts’ official launch of the Internet Explorer 7 as previously posted at retrochronix.com, the Mozilla Firefox team also decided to debut their Firefox 2.0 to match up with the competition’s browser hype. While most of the new features showcased by Internet Explorer 7, Firefox already had them since its previous releases, the Firefox’s 2.0 upgrade does not come as just a repackaged version of its old browser.

The newest release of Firefox fixed up a few usability issues from its old browser allowing an easier way to close tabs, a way to resume previous browsing sessions, support for Javascript 1.7 for Ajax fanatics out there as well as better add-ons and extensions management. It seems as if IE7 has caught up to the standards of web browsing in the web 2.0 era, but still, I can’t get past their weird usability decision of placing the address bar at the very top.

Download the latest version of Mozilla here to see which browser you prefer.

Time Lapse of an Aurora Borealis Taken in Canada

October 21st, 2006

I’ve been braggin for quite a while to go somewhere north to have a glimpse of an Aurora, since it’s truly an amazing wonder of nature. This video here shows a whole time lapse of an evening sky with an Aurora, and it’s taken in taken right here in Canada (British Columbia though). It would be awesome if we could see something like that here in Toronto.
