Looking at 2D Photographs in 3D

October 19th, 2006

Check out the video below and be in awe. Again another impressive computer technology developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon, they have managed to develop algorithms to process a simple 2D photograph into 3D. Now you can re-live or share with your friends all the sights and sounds of your caribbean cruise or Europe backpacking trip as if you were there!

IE7 Finally Launched

October 19th, 2006

IE7

The long awaited Internet Explorer 7 was finally launched today, showcasing promised features including tab browsing, rss feed reading, external modules/plugins as well as claimed improved security. On terms of layout, IE7 continues with the new ‘glossy’-textured user interface started off in MSN messenger live, in preparation for the launch of Windows Vista sometime in the distant future. However functionality-wise, all of its new ‘features’ seems to be copied straight out of a mozilla firefox. Also, I’m not sure whether it’s just my settings or the program itself, but the URL bar now seems to be stuck to the very top of the IE browser, and it is rather user-unfriendly.

Again with the new IE7, the Zune, Soapbox… it seems as if Microsoft is again doing what it does best, copying from its competitors.

Download the installation pack for IE7 here.

*Extra* The funniest thing about it is this -> checkout http://www.ie7.com/. Seems like Microsoft got the domain name too late.

Brainpower - Turning Thoughts into Action

October 10th, 2006

Neurotechnology has just taken a quantum leap as scientists have cracked the code to tapping into the signals of the brain.

In this recent experiment, a teenager with epilepsy was wired with neuro sensors over his brain in which he played the Atari classic arcade game Space Invaders with just his brainpower. This breakthrough not only unravels a lot of potential for medical technology development for physically handicapped people, the power to control the external environment with just your thought is in itself a very powerful and somewhat dangerous technology to wield. Yup, that means we’ll have brain-powered remote controls and switches very soon…

Japan Pop Art Video

October 9th, 2006

After getting a whole new perspective of the art scene last week during Toronto’s Nuit Blanche overnight art event, this video caught my interest showing a glimpse of the pop art culture in Tokyo half the way around the globe. The director of this short clip filmed a static wall for a week, and as different artists or people passed by and added their own touches, the wall quickly turned from barren to beauty.

Cool Ice Cube Trays

October 6th, 2006

Last year when I was shopping around the Design Gallery at the HK Convention Center, I saw them selling this awesome Diamond-shaped Icecube Maker there. It was one of the coolest ideas ever, making neat shapes out of ice, and adding a bit of fun to our daily life. While throughout the past year, I’ve seen a few similar icecube tray products that made different icecube shapes like sea-shells, stars or fruits, none of them really stood out as being really neat. So by surfing around the net, I’ve compiled a few of the more cooler icecube tray designs that I’ve come across.

Lego Ice Cubes

This lego ice cube tray actually lets you create iced lego bricks. Now all of us can have our try at ice sculpting this winter using ice lego blocks. If we made the ice cubes using dyed water or liquids of different color, we could even have color on our ice bricks!

Tic-Tac-Toe Ice Cubes
This Tic Tac Toe Icecube tray also deserves some credits. It’s the best idea for a bar or lounge for people to have a little fun with the ice after a couple of drink or two.

Jewel Ice Cubes
This set of jewel ice cube makers sort of resemble what I saw at the TDC, except this one has more shape varieties. It’s still an amazing idea to have a few rubys or sapphires made of frozen strawberry and blueberry juice floating around your drinks nonetheless.
